Best payment solution for small business

It depends on how much you take and whether you need to accept cards. If most of your sales are on cards, a pay-as-you-go reader from SumUp, Square or Zettle is the simplest option, and you pay a percentage of every sale. If you would rather your payment costs stopped rising with your takings, a flat monthly fee over Open Banking keeps the cost the same whether you take £1,000 or £10,000 a month.

The crossover is usually around £1,500 a month. Below that, a percentage on a small number of sales is cheap. Above it, the percentage keeps growing while a flat fee such as BriizPay's £24.99 a month Starter plan does not.

Worth checking before you commit: terminal rental, minimum monthly charges, contract length and how quickly money reaches your account. Those often cost more than the headline rate.

BriizPay does not process card payments, so if card acceptance is essential you will still want a reader alongside it.
